He was a coward. A pitiful excuse for a human being.
The perfect opportunity to be honest with Anna and admit who he was had dropped into his lap and heâd walked away from it. As he led her to the dining area, he thought of how Alex would chide him for not taking his advice. Perhaps he was right, but he had to believe she would prefer to complete her week first, as she had endured a lifetime where sheâd had little choice but to fall in with her parentsâ directives. This experience would give her the opportunity to choose something for herself for the first time since she had been that wild, spirited creature heâd gotten to know and love, and he did not want to be the one to steal that away from her. He had no doubt should she find out his identity now, she would leave before the week was out. And he couldnât do that to her. She wanted this for herself, and damn, he wanted it for her as well, as long as he was the one to give it to her.
But he also knew the longer she was in the dark about his identity, the more she would feel betrayed. When heâd first concocted this plan, heâd believed he could seduce her enough that she would forgive him the subterfuge. Now he wasnât so sure. Life had not been kind to her, and she deserved honesty.
If only he knew if she still had memories of him. Does she still dream of me as I do her? Does she remember our first magical kiss? Heâd made a solemn promise to himself that he would not take her fully until she knew the truth, and he owed her that much. And if she didnât forgive him, so be it. But how he prayed she would. All this preparation would not be for naught.
The sound of laughing in the distance reminded him of the event he had planned. This particular activity was always a favourite among the guests, and he hoped Anna would find pleasure in it. It was certainly the most hedonistic party at Maitland House, and he was glad Alex had agreed to arrange it to occur this week during Annaâs visit. If any session would prove that she would fit into this lifeâthe life he wanted to share with her, then this was it. But his stomach churned with the fear of her rejection once he revealed himself to her.
As he approached the dining room door he hesitated. He turned to Anna before entering. Her head was lowered, but she stopped in place, as expected. She had taken to his instruction with more speed than he could ever have imagined, and the grace with which she stood belied the fact she was naked and bound, and soon to be in the presence of many others who would see her completely and in all her glory. If it were not for the small twitch
